Great Torrington is a friendly, welcoming town, set in the midst of rolling, unspoilt green countryside. An ancient settlement extraordinarily sited on an inland cliff top with steep drops down to the River Torridge below. This impressive situation offers spectacular views. In the very heart of Tarka Country, the wonderful landscape has remained practically unchanged since Henry Williamson wrote his classic novel “Tarka the Otter†in the 1920’s.
Great Torrington for years was valued for its strategic importance. The town had a significant role in the English Civil War, specifically, the Battle of Torrington in 1646 which marked the end of Royalist resistance in the West Country. Today, Great Torrington boasts many attractions for the whole family. The Tarka Trail runs on the old railway line, where from the Puffing Billy station, you can hire bikes and enjoy the spectacular scenery, before stopping for a cheeky cream tea along the way.
The town itself has many small and unique shops just waiting for you to explore: traditional bakeries, butchers, soap and craft shops, and many more. It has a Pannier market which runs from Thursday to Saturday, a Museum and also the Plough Theatre which has a wide and varied programme of live and film entertainment. Great Torrington also has one of the most active volunteering communities in the United Kingdom and is well known for the massive bonfires built by the ‘Cavaliers’ for charity.
There is so much to offer at Dartington Crystal in Great Torrington. A fantastic visitor attraction, with something for all the family.
