Things to Do
There is so much to do in South Molton to make for a wonderful family day out. The first thing we all need to do when we visit a town or village if we are driving, is find somewhere to park. In South Molton that is not a problem as they have a big market car park situated in the centre of the town. From this car park, you make a very short walk to the Pannier Market which is our first activity on the list of things to do.
The Pannier Market is the heart of South Molton where around 70 local businesses sell their products and produce. It is held in the old cattle market which makes for a sentimental, beautiful and traditional setting and entry is free. Each stall is filled with its own unique products from furniture to fresh fish! There is something for everyone in the Pannier Market and is an event which you can spend several hours simply browsing. It is held every Thursday and Saturday between 8am and 1:30pm.
For those of you who love food and enjoy browsing shops filled with food goodies then you are in luck because South Molton has an excellent choice of food shops to explore. Up first is Melchior Chocolates, a stunning chocolate shop where they make luxury chocolates that are just divine. Carlo Melchior trained as a chocolatier in his native Switzerland and brought his skills to the UK. The next food shop is one for the cheese lovers and it is The Cheese Larder, a deli that is filled with an abundance of local produce. Cheeses include a Devon Oke, a Devon Blue, a Ticklemore Goats Cheese and more. Additionally, they sell local sweets, jams, chutneys, alcohol and they can put together hampers which make for great gifts. Finally, for those of you with a sweet tooth, there is a fantastic sweet shop called the Bon Bon. It is like stepping back in time to a traditional sweet shop where behind the counter is jars and jars of sweets along with lots of different chocolates.
In addition to the wonderful food shops, there are some fantastic clothes, gift and furniture shops including Source For The Goose, a vintage furniture shop with gift style items and vintage furniture. Libertine is another great shop for the ladies as it is filled with a beautiful range of clothing. Finally, another shop we love is Lovetails Country Gifts which has a great collection of homewares, gifts and more. In addition to these three lovely shops, there are lots of others to explore and enjoy.
If you would like to delve into the history of South Molton then you will want to head to the South Molton Museum. It is located on the ground floor of the Guildhall and is managed by the South Molton Town Council and volunteers. There is a range of exhibitions to explore including Newshams fire engine, a cider press and a penny-farthing bicycle.
An attraction that the whole family will enjoy is Quince Honey Farm, an attraction all about honeybees! Here you can learn about a bee’s life, walk around their gardens, explore the gift shop or enjoy a delicious meal in the cafe. There is also other experience run at the site including honey tasting and candle rolling.
Finally, if you want to head to the place that all the locals go to the Mole Valley Farmers is a must.
